A Wayne County initiative to increase voter turnout is resulting in more people registering to vote in the November general election.

Wayne County Clerk Cathy M. Garrett is asking county residents to take as many as 20 other voters to the polls as part of the Wayne County Challenge. The final day to register is Oct. 9.

Garrett's office says more than 11,100 voter registration forms have been submitted to the county since July.

Mailings, e-mails, social media and community meetings are being to used to urge people to register to vote and educate them on the importance of voting.

Garrett says that 62 percent of registered county residents voted in the 2008 presidential election.
