The parents of a Detroit-area teenager who was fatally shot by his grandmother say they're pleased with the second-degree murder conviction.
The Oakland County jury rejected Sandra Layne's claim of self-defense and convicted her Tuesday in the death of Jonathan Hoffman.
Jennifer Hoffman is Layne's daughter and Hoffman's mother. She calls Layne a "monster" and insists she never was told that her 17-year-old son was having serious problems while living with his grandmother in West Bloomfield Township last year.
Jonathan Hoffman's parents were divorced and living in Arizona where his sister was being treated for a brain tumor.
Layne fired her gun 10 times during an argument, striking Jonathan Hoffman with six shots. A crucial piece of evidence was the boy's 911 call.
Layne's husband Fred Layne declined comment.
