The U.S. Coast Guard is increasing its presence around the Great Lakes starting Friday as part of a national effort to crack down on those who operate a boat while drinking alcohol.
The Coast Guard says the stepped-up enforcement effort runs
through Sunday. State and local agencies around the region also are
expected to participate.
The annual campaign aims to enforce boating under the influence
laws and to educate boaters of the risks involved with drinking
while boating.
The Coast Guard says it's recently found several recreational
boaters in the Great Lakes region to be operating vessels under the
influence of alcohol.
