A cluster of Salmonella cases has Michigan officials investigating a cause, and a Michigan meat company recalling 500 pounds of beef products that may be contaminated.
The departments of Community Health (MDCH) and Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) are investigating nine confirmed cases of the infection in Michigan. Six of the nine people reported the Middle Eastern dish, kibbeh, in early December.
While not all instances of Salmonella reported eating that dish in particular, the source of their exposure remains under investigation. The Michigan company Jouni Meats, Inc., recalled 500 pounds of ground beef products as an act of precaution.
The contaminated beef products were produced between Dec. 4 and 9, 2012, and according to officials, were distributed to a Macomb County restaurant and sold without a label.
Officials say the onset of the illnesses began Dec. 9 and continued popping up until Jan. 7, 2013, infecting people ranging from two-years-old to 87 years-old. Most of the cases reside in southeast Michigan in Huron, Macomb, Delta-Menominee, Oakland and Wayne counties.
In addition to the nine cases in Michigan, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there are eight other cases nationwide.
