Here's a recap of our City by City report fro January 9, 2013:
This month's Passport to Play event in South Bend will take advantage of all of the snow. Snowflake Follies will be on Saturday from 10 to 11:30a.m. at Erskine Golf Course on Miami road. It will include snowball shot put, winter relays, and a snowman building contest. The event is free and open to everyone.
Local honey-makers could walk away national champions. Five types of Honey From the Hood, made in South Bend, have been entered at the national bee keeping convention in Baton Rouge. They submitted entries in different categories, and final awards will be given this weekend.
St. Joseph, Mich.
While many businesses shut their doors during the cold this week, one restaurant in St. Joseph stayed open for a good cause. According to The Elkhart Truth, Silver Beach Pizza more than doubled their typical Monday night sales this week, and they're donating all $4,833 to the soup kitchen. It's the largest single donation the restaurant has ever made. No one was forced to work in the cold Monday night, but 10 employees made it out to help.
County and city workers who have spent days out in the cold clearing streets can get a discount on a hot meal. Scotty's Brewhouse and Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Company are offering 25 percent off and a free coffee or beverage to workers with a government I.D. They always do this on Veterans and Memorial Day and decided the storm workers also deserve some love.
Sign-ups are underway for the Mishawaka Penn Harris Public Librarys' winter story time programs. You can register by phone, online or in person. Children who are residents of Penn or Harris townships, or whose families purchased a library card, will get first priority.
Ten candidates have filed so far to run in the May primary elections in Elkhart County. According to The Goshen News, two of those people are Brad Rogers for sheriff and Cathy Searcy for county assessor. There are 79 positions up for election on May 6th. Ballot filing in the county began Wednesday.
You can jump into the crazy world of Alice in Wonderland. The Lerner Theater is holding auditions for Through the Looking Glass. Most of the roles are for teens and adults, but there are a few roles for children. Auditions start at 6p.m.
Four teens charged with felony murder after breaking into a home in October 2012 will appear on Dr. Phil, according to The Elkhart Truth. The case has been very controversial, as all four teens were charged even though it was the homeowner who shot and killed the 21-year-old suspect, Danzele Johnson.
