(AP) - The Archdiocese of Detroit says the gun buyback program it co-sponsored with city police paid out $16,820 for the 365 weapons that citizens brought to a church.
St. Cecilia Catholic Church hosted Thursday's five-hour gun buyback program. Bishop Donald Hanchon tells WWJ-AM that church members raised $18,000 to fund the buyback.
A group of advocates of the open carrying of firearms showed up to protest the buyback. Some of them were making offers to buy the guns themselves.
Under the police buyback program, people turning in an operational handgun got up to $50 and up to $100 for two or more operational handguns.
Those submitting assault weapons got up to $100. The archdiocese says people brought in at least six assaults weapons and several sawed-off shotguns.
