A weeklong summer camp in northern Oakland County has allowed children with medical conditions to have a little fun.
Camp Michitanki was held in June at the YMCA's Camp Ohiyesa in Holly for 85 children ages 7-17.
Michitanki co-founder and transplant nurse Vicki Shieck tells the Detroit Free Press "scars are normal" at the camp whose participants have undergone several medical treatments.
Shieck and fellow nurse Doug Armstrong first teamed up 16 years ago when they drove 10 children to a transplant camp in West Virginia. In 2003, they partnered with the YMCA.
Camp Michitanki meets once a year and includes transplant nurses, physicians and community volunteers.
Armstrong says Camp Michitanki kids often are "given a list of can'ts. At camp, it's all about what they can do."
