A Michigan school district that says it can't afford to pay its teachers will remain closed for a second day Wednesday after laying off staff because of a loss of state funds.
The Buena Vista School District is in Saginaw County just outside of Saginaw. It cancelled classes Tuesday and held a community meeting Tuesday evening attended by about 100 people.
Afterward, MLive.com reports school board President Randy L. Jackson said classes also are off at least through Wednesday. The board meets Thursday evening.
The Michigan Education Association says the board voted Monday to lay off employees.
The union says the 27 teachers were willing to work this week anyway, but Jackson says that would have presented legal issues.
The district announced last week it couldn't make payroll May 24.
