SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. A judge has set a $500,000 bond for a suburban Detroit woman charged with murdering her 2-year-old son who was left buckled inside a sweltering minivan.
Twenty-one-year-old Audrionna Rhoades of Macomb County's Shelby Township was arraigned Tuesday on child abuse and second-degree murder charges. She has asked for a court-appointed lawyer.
Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith says that Rhoades left her son James Nelson buckled to the seat in the van the morning of Sept. 3, then drove another vehicle to work. He says that 9½ hours later, a roommate noticed James's foot through the window of the van.
The child was freed but died soon after at a hospital.
