PORTAGE, Mich. (AP) - Runners in southwestern Michigan plan to hold a memorial event to promote unity following the Boston Marathon bombing.
Brett Beier tells the Kalamazoo Gazette (http://bit.ly/ZnQNls ) a run will take place Tuesday evening. Beier wants people to run the first half-mile together in honor of all the runners who weren't able to run the last half-mile of the marathon following Monday's attack.
Beier said a friend who ran the Boston Marathon also may participate in the memorial run in Portage, about 130 miles west of Detroit.
Beier said he posted the idea for the memorial run on the Kalamazoo Area Runners' Facebook page Monday evening, and got strong response. He said it "just seemed like a great way to bring the running community together" and celebrate common bonds.
