Bike to Work Week kicks off with new opportunities for distant commuters

Michiana Bike to Work Week 2013, sponsored by the Bike Michiana Coalition, pedals off Monday, May 13th and continues through Sunday, May 19th all over Michiana. Events for the week include activities for commuting adults, competitive teams, recognitions, school children, breakfasts and lunches.

The hottest thing in bike commuting this year is parking and biking for residents who live too far for the full ride in to work. Memorial Hospital of South Bend is sponsoring the area's first Park-n-Bike at the North Village Mall property on Indiana 933 North immediately adjacent to the bikeway leading along the river to downtown South Bend.

Anyone can join the fun and compete on mileage individually or as teams for recognition and sponsor discounts by registering with friends and co-workers online.

Tuesday, May 14th brings the most popular event of Bike to Work Week, the Organic Blueberry Pancake Breakfast starting at 7 a.m., sponsored by 1st Source Bank and hosted by LaSalle Grill. Mayor Pete Buttigieg will be on-hand to welcome bicyclists to downtown South Bend. Should it rain, the entire breakfast event schedule will be moved to Wednesday, May 15th.

School kids can join the fun on Bike to School Day, Thursday, May 16th. Children are encouraged to ride to school with friends, providing their schools pre-approve riding to their particular school as safe.

The finale of Michiana Bike to Work Week is the Bike to Lunch event held Friday, May 17th beginning at 11:30 a.m. on the grounds of the College Football Hall of Fame in downtown South Bend sponsored by 1st Source Bank and Fiddler's Hearth.
