Some local high school students are hoping to change the reputation and future of the community.
On Monday night, two Benton Harbor High School students asked the commission to declare June 6 a day of peace in the city.
The students are organizing a peace walk from Benton Harbor High School to Broadway Wark that day.
The idea came after a small riot broke out at the high school a couple months ago.
Students say they want to show people that is not the real Benton Harbor.
Trekell Davis and Jasmnika Newbern proposed Peace Day.
“Benton Harbor does not have a good reputation for good things, but they have more of a reputation for bad things so I think this can be a big step,” said Davis.
“We want everybody to see that our community can overcome with all of the problems there are people who want to prosper and do something from Benton Harbor,” Newbern explained.
The commission unanimously approved a resolution declaring June 6 a day of peace.
The students are also hosting a peace rally on May 31.
