Barbara, Laura Bush attend symposium in Michigan

Barbara and Laura Bush have shared their insights about being first lady during a symposium on the subject in Grand Rapids.

The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law attended a luncheon event Monday during a daylong conference devoted to examining the role of the first lady.

MLive.com says the Bushes discussed life in the White House, current events and their interactions with world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Adding some trademark Bush humor to the proceedings, Laura Bush supplied a two-word answer to the question of how one prepares to be first lady. She says the key is to "marry well."

"America's First Ladies: An Enduring Legacy" is hosted by the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.
