UPDATE: Police release name of man wanted in Tuesday chase, standoff

Police are searching for Ryan James Earl, 28, who led them on a massive chase Tuesday, resulting in a SWAT standoff.

The pursuit started in Berrien County, where police set up an undercover drug buy. They planned to bust the suspect in the parking lot of a convenience store on State Line Road, but he got away.

Anyone with information on Earl's whereabouts are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-342-STOP (7867).

"We tried to take him down and, before we could get him out of the car is when he put the car in reverse and hit our officer and took off," said Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey.

Berrien County police say the suspect hit officer Trent Babcock with the front end of his car, causing the deputy to roll over his parked squad car. He is a 15-year veteran of the department and is recovering at home after being treated for a bruising and swelling on his leg.

The suspect then led police to the Indian Springs apartment complex off Portage Road in South Bend.

Police say that's where a bus driver reported seeing the suspect leave his car and go into one of the units.

A SWAT team was called to the scene around noon. Some residents were evacuated and police blocked off the entrance to the complex.

"After we activated the SWAT team, made a search of the buildings, it was clear that our suspect at this point had departed and he's at large at this time," said South Bend Police Captain Phil Trent.

After searching an apartment at the scene, police say it appears the suspect never went inside. But, it's obvious he made a stop at Indian Springs. He left behind his red Oldsmobile with Michigan plates.

The Berrien County Sheriff's Department will contact the prosecutor's office and plans to seek charges of assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest causing injury to the officer, and fleeing and eluding causing injury to the officer.
