SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) - The U.S.-Canadian authority that manages the bridge connecting the Michigan and Ontario cities of Sault Ste. Marie has approved an $8.9 million contract to build a new toll plaza on the Michigan side.

The Evening News of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan reported Sunday that the Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Authority unanimously OK'd the deal with DeVere Construction from Alpena, Michigan.

The project will replace the 52-year-old toll plaza and office building and will take place about 150 feet south of the existing booths and building.

Work is to start next month and wrap up in November 2015.

Authority General Manager Phil Becker says the toll booths now are too close to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection secondary truck inspection bays, causing maneuvering problems.
