GREEN LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. A 33-year-old Northern Michigan woman has been identified as the pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle along U.S. Highway 31 in Grand Traverse County.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports Friday that authorities believe Sarah Phillips was walking in the middle of the road when she was hit about 11 p.m. Thursday in Green Lake Township.

A 19-year-old Traverse City woman was driving the car that hit Phillips.

Grand Traverse County sheriff's Capt. Dave Meachum says deputies originally were dispatched to reports of a pedestrian in dark clothing walking in the middle of M-137. He says a deputy found no sign of anyone walking on M-137, but came across the accident after turning onto U.S. 31.

Green Lake Township is south of Traverse City.

The accident remains under investigation.
