Albom seeks help to board up 100 Detroit homes

Journalist, author and philanthropist Mitch Albom is inviting people to help board up 100 houses in one day in Detroit.

Albom says abandoned homes have become a "terrible symbol of Detroit." He says he and others have already identified the homes near Osborn High School. There is an elementary school as well as parks in the area.

Writing Sunday in the Detroit Free Press, Albom says the homes need to be demolished, but that won't happen soon enough. He says boarding them up on Aug. 25 should provide some safety to children as they return to school.

Bolyard Lumber of Birmingham is providing the wood. Other groups are also pitching in. For more information, go online at
