Detroit Mayor Dave Bing is among hundreds of volunteers who came out to board up homes and clean up an east-side neighborhood as part of a grassroots initiative organized by journalist, author and philanthropist Mitch Albom.

The volunteers arrived Saturday morning to board up 100 abandoned houses. They also picked up garbage near Osborn High School.

The Detroit News reports (http://bit.ly/PIQYk8) more than 450 volunteers are expected to participate in the effort throughout the day.

Albom says in the long run, he wants to rebuild the neighborhoods, but in the short run, he wants them to be safe so the people living there "don't leave and create more abandoned houses."
