DETROIT (AP) - White House press secretary Jay Carney says President Barack Obama is aware of Detroit's financial crisis and the administration is in touch with city leaders.

The Detroit News says Carney was asked about Detroit at his regular news briefing Thursday.

Carney says he's unaware of any federal government plans to intervene. Detroit is operating under a state-appointed emergency financial manager and facing a possible bankruptcy filing.

The press secretary says "administration officials have been in contact with leaders in Detroit" but says he's "not aware of any plans and proposals the president has."

Emergency manager Kevyn Orr is seeking deep concessions in health coverage and pensions from Detroit retirees and from bondholders in the face of a $380 million deficit and long-term debt of about $17 billion.
