GAYLORD, Mich. Authorities say 911 emergency phone service is out in six rural counties in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula.

The outage Wednesday afternoon affects Alpena, Montmorency, Oscoda, Otsego, Presque Isle and Roscommon counties. There's no immediate word of what's causing the outage.

The phone at the Otsego County sheriff's department in Gaylord repeatedly rang busy Wednesday afternoon.
