Man pleads no contest to shooting mother

A Marcellus man accused of fatally shooting his mother has pleaded no contest to second-degree murder.

Timothy Harris was scheduled to begin trial Tuesday, but will now have open murder and felony murder charges dropped at his May 3 sentencing.

Authorities say Rose Harris was shot with a rifle last July in a home just south of Lawton in Van Buren County. Police said Timothy Harris called police and reported an argument and that his mother had been shot.

Emergency personnel tried to revive the woman in her late 70s, but were unsuccessful.

Police tell our reporting partners at WOOD-TV that Timothy Harris has been cooperative. He maintains the shooting was an accident.

A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but is treated as such for sentencing purposes.
