Five Wayne County sheriff's deputies are suspended without pay after being charged with assaulting inmates at the county jail in recent years.
Charges including assault with intent to cause great bodily harm and misconduct in office were announced Tuesday by the Wane County prosecutor's office. The men are due back in court July 9 for preliminary examinations to determine whether there's enough evidence for them to stand trial.
Officials say the assaults happened in October 2009, January 2010 and February 2010. The inmates were treated for their injuries at a Detroit hospital.
