Divers are searching for a Fruitport man presumed drowned after being thrown into the Grand River in a head-on collision between two speedboats.

Ottawa County sheriff's Lt. Mike Brookhouse says 53-year-old Edward Johnson has been missing since the collision about 9:45 p.m. Saturday in Spring Lake Township, about 25 miles northwest of Grand Rapids.

A passenger in his 19-foot boat, 48-year-old Barbara Briggs of Fruitport, is in stable condition at a Muskegon-area hospital.

Brookhouse tells The Grand Rapids Press the driver of the other boat, a 23-year-old Grand Haven man, was also thrown overboard but wasn't injured. He was jailed pending completion of lab tests and recovery of Johnson's body.

Four passengers on his boat also escaped injury.

Divers are using sonar to help locate the body in the murky water.
