A police dive team has recovered seven vehicles from their watery graveyard in the Detroit River.

The two-day operation began Wednesday southwest of downtown Detroit.

Officials say the sunken vehicles were spotted last month while members of the department's Underwater Recovery Team were involved in a separate investigation.

It isn't known why or how long the vehicles have been in the river, or what might be in them. Officer Don Donakowski, a police spokesman, says the vehicles are being searched for clues to how they wound up there.

The murky river is notorious for having swift and unpredictable underwater currents.
