Michigan's Lower Peninsula is expecting up to 10 inches of snow from a storm that has moved into the Great Lakes region from the southern Plains.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning through Friday for a large part of the peninsula, including the Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint and Detroit areas.
Hundreds of schools have called off classes throughout the state, and there have been numerous traffic accidents but no reports of serious injuries.
Road commissions have mobilized snow plows and salting teams as heavy snow started to fall before daybreak. Detroit Metropolitan Airport spokesman Mike Conway told WDIV-TV there have been some flight delays and cancellations.
The Detroit Zoo is offering free admission for children under 13 who come with a paying adult.
