A southeastern Michigan teenager who killed her grandmother with morphine has been sentenced to life in prison with a chance for parole in 20 years.

Kristina Adkins cried as she apologized Friday for poisoning 53-year-old Virginia Bentley of Lenawee County in 2006. She was 13 at the time.

Probate Judge Margaret Noe chose an adult sentence for the 16-year-old Adkins. She could have placed her in a juvenile facility until age 21 and then evaluated whether prison should be appropriate.

Adkins pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Oct. 10. Her attorney claims Adkins was mistreated by Bentley.

Court administrator David Stanifer says the allegations did not persuade the judge to change the sentence.
