Federal authorities in Detroit are hoping to recover hundreds of thousands of dollars from an unusual source: The sale of antique dolls, dollhouse furniture and miniature toys.

A Detroit-area man is accused of stealing more than $4 million from an insurance company. The government says some of that money was used to purchase about 400 dolls and accessories as gifts for a woman.

The collection is back with a Maryland auction house for storage and resale. The U.S. Attorney's Office is seeking a judge's approval to step in and recover any money for the insurer.

John Bender of Milford has NOT been charged with a crime. But in response to a civil lawsuit filed by Medilink Insurance, he says he's the subject of a criminal investigation.

His company, J.P. Bender and Associates of Novi, managed medical-malpractice claims for Medilink. Medilink accuses Bender of pocketing millions.
