A 100-year-old patchwork quilt that includes the hand-stitched names of 70 Gratiot County students has been returned to the area.

The Morning Sun of Mount Clemens reports Carol Nash of Grand Rapids found the quilt among her late friend's belongings and donated it to the Breckenridge-Wheeler Area Historical Society.

The names of the students were from School District No. 5, also known as the Ricks School. Nash's friend Charlotte Pernert of Holt died about two years ago and was related to the school's teacher, Fred C. Pernert.

Among the last names stitched on the quilt are Meyer, Cole, Gibson, Beard, Rooks, Giles, Shellington, Harris, Howd, Kaufman, Wilkins, Arnold, Cummings and Parkhouse.
