Police say a 52-year-old Livingston County man is dead after being run over by an all-terrain vehicle being driven by his mother.

Sheriff's deputies say Ronald Smith was working early Saturday afternoon with his mother, Mary Smith, at her farm in Cohoctah Township, about six miles north of Howell. They say Ronald Smith was opening a gate when his mother apparently lost control of the ATV, hit the gate and struck him.

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus says Smith was trapped underneath the vehicle. Mary Smith tried unsuccessfully to get the ATV off her son, and he died at the scene.

Mary Smith was treated at St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital in Howell after the accident.
