A driver accused in a crash that killed an off-duty Flint police officer has been convicted of second-degree murder.

A jury in Oakland County Circuit Court deliberated for three hours Friday before returning the verdict in the case of 26-year-old Ramon Pineda. He faces up to life in prison when sentenced June 4.

Authorities say Pineda is a Mexican citizen who was living in Ortonville without a valid visa. Defense attorney Elias Escobedo Jr. argued the murder charge was excessive.

Witnesses say that 26-year-old Vincent D'Anna was on a motorcycle in Independence Township Aug. 26 when Pineda's vehicle struck him from behind.

Pineda was also convicted of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, causing death, and failure to stop at an injury accident.
