Michigan lawmakers debate whether to ban cell phone usage while driving

It could help keep people safe on the roads.

Michigan lawmakers are again debating whether to crack down on cell phone use while driving.

A state House committee debated bills Thursday that would ban cell phone use unless a driver was using a hands-free device.

Other bills would prohibit text messaging while driving.

There would be exceptions to the rules in the event of an emergency.

Similar efforts in Michigan have fizzled in the past.
