Detroit plans to rehire 26 laid-off firefighters with a $5.6 million federal grant.
The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant announced Friday comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The funding will cover two years of salaries and benefits for firefighters who were laid off on Aug. 10. In June, FEMA awarded to Detroit $22.5 million for salaries and benefits that prevented 108 firefighters from being laid off.
Detroit firefighters respond each year to about 30,000 calls.
