LELAND, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a 16-year-old boy is missing and believed drowned while swimming at a beach in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports (http://bit.ly/Q6LbqI ) the Lake Leelanau youth was swimming Thursday near shore at Van's Beach in Leland when he was swept away.

The Leelanau County sheriff's marine patrol, area fire department rescue teams and the U.S. Coast guard searched Thursday for the boy until it became too dark.

The search was expected to resume Friday around the beach, located about 20 miles northwest of Traverse City. The boy's name wasn't immediately released.
