More than a dozen members of the famed Tuskegee Airmen unit are to be honored at a ceremony in downtown Detroit.
The Detroit RiverFront Conservancy has arranged a special celebration Friday as part of the launch of its annual Detroit River Days Festival.
Fifteen former Tuskegee Airmen are expected to attend the event
at GM Plaza at the Renaissance Center.
A B-17 bomber from World War II is to depart from Willow Run
Airport and make three flyovers during the ceremony.
And a presentation is to be made by Mayor Dave Bing.
The Tuskegee Airmen were members of an African-American air
unit, the Tuskegee, Ala.-based 332nd Fighter Group. They served at
a time when the U.S. military practiced rigid racial segregation,
denying blacks most promotional opportunities.
