A former middle school teacher has been charged with second-degree child abuse, and lewd and lascivious conduct.
Richard Spangler of Lake City was arraigned Thursday. He is accused of having inappropriate contact with students. He was released on $5,000 bond.
Reached by telephone, Spangler tells The Associated Press on Friday he will fight the charges.
State police from Mount Pleasant arrested the 40-year-old math teacher on Wednesday after a four-month investigation.
Sgt. David Kaiser told the Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant and The Saginaw News that troopers in October received a tip about Spangler. Kaiser says a 12-year-old in the Harrison Community Schools district spoke out before other 7th graders came forward.
