Michigan residents are battening down the hatches as they get set for a winter storm forecast to dump up to 13 inches of snow in parts of the state.

At least 30 schools in southeastern Michigan canceled Friday's classes in anticipation of the storm, which was pushing in from the west. Light snow was beginning to fall by 1 a.m. in wide areas of the state.

The storm has been blamed for at least four deaths: three in Texas and one in Oklahoma.

The National Weather Service says parts of southwestern Michigan will get up to 13 inches of snow before the storm ends Friday night. It says Detroit and other parts of southeastern Michigan will get up to 10 inches.
