A cat's howls during a pre-dawn house fire today in Allendale may have saved the lives of five family members.

There were no injuries reported but the fire destroyed the garage, a Jeep parked inside and a second-floor bedroom at Warren and Diane Busscher's home.

Lieutenant Michael Keefe of the Allendale Fire Department says the couple and their three children were sleeping when Diane Busscher awoke to hear the family's black cat crying from the garage.

She went to investigate and discovered the fire. The woman grabbed the cat and ran back through the house, yelling for everyone to go outside.

The fire started in the garage. Keefe says the cause isn't known but apparently the cat isn't to blame.
