A teenage girl who authorities say gave antifreeze to pets belonging to her boyfriend's daughter will spend five years on probation.

Brandi Charvat of St. Charles was sentenced Tuesday after pleading no contest in the case.

A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but is treated as such for sentencing purposes.

Authorities say the 18-year-old Charvat killed a dog and a cat after her 60-year-old boyfriend's family opposed their relationship. She was originally charged with torturing and killing an animal.

The Saginaw News reports the teen told detectives she thought the antifreeze would only make the pets sick.

Charvat was studying to be a veterinary technician at the time of the incident last January.
