A woman has sued the Ferndale School District over the death of her 5-year-old daughter, who was struck when a badly rusted school flagpole snapped in high winds.

Angel Pocock-Smith of Oak Park was killed last April in a courtyard at Roosevelt Primary School.

A lawyer for Angela Smith-Johnson says district officials should have known for years the pole was a serious hazard.

A district spokeswoman says members of the school community grieved over Angel's death and remain very sad over her loss.

Oakland County Circuit Judge Edward Sosnick will hear the suit, filed this month.
