A 51-year-old man faces possible federal charges for allegedly trying to recover a letter he mailed by stealing a street corner mailbox.
Police in Wayne County's Redford Township have declined to identify the man who they say unbolted the mailbox from its concrete pad and tried to drag it down the street. The suspect was turned over to federal authorities last week.
Township police Chief John Buck tells The Detroit News that the man said he had been drinking and regretted slipping an envelope into the slot. Buck says investigators think he may have been trying to steal letters that might have contained Christmas money.
