State cutting back on ski trail grooming

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is cutting back on maintenance of cross country ski trails this winter because of its tight budget.

The DNR says it will carry out existing agreements with volunteer groups that groom cross country trails in state forests. But the department won't enter into any new agreements with the groups during the current fiscal year, which began in October.

Also, the DNR says it no longer will groom 16 forest pathways in northern Michigan that it previously maintained.

Director Rebecca Humphries says the cutbacks result from cuts to the department's budget. She says the DNR will have to make further spending reductions just to carry out the existing maintenance contracts.
