Crews are cleaning up a Menominee street after about 450 gallons of industrial-strength bleach spilled from a truck.
Deputy Fire Chief Mark Petersen says the tractor-trailer was hauling 12 containers of sodium hypochlorite from a plant in Oshkosh, Wis., to a paper mill in Escanaba. When the driver hit the brakes to avoid a collision, two containers fell over and were punctured.
Some of their contents leaked onto 10th Avenue, which is also U.S. Highway 41.
No one was hurt.
The EagleHerald of Menominee and Marinette, Wis., reports that a nearby school continued normal operations but pupils who walk home were instructed to avoid the spill area.
A private contractor and city workers were continuing cleanup work Tuesday night.
