Benton Harbor Schools receive grant

The third times the charm for the Benton Harbor School District.

Yesterday United States Congressman Fred Upton announced the United States Department of education has awarded the school nearly 850 thousand dollars.

This is the third time the school has applied for the "smaller learning communities grant, the first time they've received it.

School administrators say the grant will go a long way in improving education for Benton Harbor children.

Virginia Maxwell of Benton Harbor Schools says, “It will give our teachers and our staff an opportunity to make sure curriculum is aligned, that graduation requirements are in place. It will expand the opportunity for AP classes, for dual enrollment in college; it will just do wonders for our kids.”

The school is expecting the first part of the cash to come next week.
