ANN ARBOR, Mich. At least 104 cases of whooping cough have been reported so far this year in Washtenaw County.
That's compared with 28 cases all of last year in the county.
There were 358 cases though July 20 in the state - a slight decline from 2012.
Whooping cough is also known as pertussis. It's a highly contagious and potentially deadly respiratory disease associated with coughing fits as the infected person struggles to catch his or her breath.
The county also saw a high number of cases in 2010. After declines the past two years, it jumped again this year with quite a few cases popping up in Ann Arbor schools in the spring.
