Worker alert after Carmel trench rescue

Authorities in Carmel say a worker freed from a trench after dirt trapped him up to his waist for more than three hours was alert and conscious as he left the scene.

Carmel Fire Department spokesman Bruce Knott says the airlifted to a hospital after being freed shortly after 4 p.m.

Knott says the worker is employed by Bedell Plumbing of Greenfield. He was part of a crew installing a new sewer line when a portion of the trench collapsed.

The man's name and medical condition were not immediately released.

Carmel is a suburb north of Indianapolis.
