MIDDLEBURY A woman whose son died in prison is suing the Indiana Department of Corrections as well as some prison guards.

The Elkhart Truth reports that Steven Blessing, 24 from Middlebury, hung himself in his cell at the Westville Correctional Facility two years ago. He was serving 10 years for aggravated battery.

Blessing feared a particular set of inmates at Westville and attempted to be moved to a higher security area. Though the prison did decide to grant that request, Blessing's mother claims they played a cruel joke, telling him instead that they were moving him to the same dorm as the inmates he feared.

He committed suicide shortly after.
