The gunman involved in an Elkhart supermarket shooting had a not-so-secret interest in serial killers and guns. Shawn Walter Bair was killed by Elkhart police when they responded to an active shooting situation at the Martin’s supermarket on Bristol St. Bair shot and killed a 20-year-old Martin’s employee and a 44-year-old shopper.
Bair himself was a 22 year-old from Elkhart. His Facebook page contains disturbing images of serial killers as well as a bloodied photograph of himself after being attacked by a pit bull. Scrolling through Bair’s Facebook timeline revealed telling posts like:
“I HOPE YOU ALL BURN IN THE FURTHEST PITS OF HELL I HOPE THE TORTURE LASTS FOREVER AND EVERY SECOND OF EVERY MINUTE YOUR THINKING ABOUT YOUR LOVED ONES.”
In another post from 2010, Bair referred to “ticking time bombs” dismissed by others as chemically unbalanced or sick, he added that those time bombs eventually will explode and take victims with them.
According to Indiana State Police’s Sgt. Trent Smith, Bair was a known customer at the supermarket. Wednesday night he entered the store at around 9:30 p.m. and wandered around for 30 minutes—long enough to arouse the attention of a security guard.
“He was going to the store with a mission,” Smith said at a press conference on Thursday morning. Police have not yet determined a motive and are searching for any connections between Bair and his victim’s Krystle Dikes and Rachelle Godfread.
NewsCenter 16 discovered Bair and Dikes had only two mutual friends and a shared interest in guns. Both Bair and Dikes attended Elkhart Central High School, however they did not graduate in the same class.
Bair started at Elkhart Central as a freshman in the fall of 2006. He stayed a year and a half until leaving halfway through his sophomore year. A representative for Elkhart Community Schools said Bair came to the district from out of state and then left in 2007 to attend another school out of state.
In 2009 and 2010, Bair was convicted in Elkhart Superior Court: once for stealing from Martin’s supermarket on Jackson Blvd., and another time for possession of a controlled substance and marijuana.
According to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth, Bair was arrested at Martin’s Super Market on 555 E. Jackson Blvd. after taking a box of Coricidin-brand drugs worth $5.89. On June 15, 2010, Bair was convicted of theft, a Class D felony, and sentenced to 18-months in jail with 12 months suspended.
Bair was then ordered to pay the amount stolen back to Martin’s Super Market as restitution, he was then ordered to get “addictions assessment” and enroll in a program at Oaklwan Psychiatric Center for therapy.
The family of Shawn Bair declined to comment, a neighbor at Bair's mother's house told NewsCenter 16 the family wished to be left alone.
However, Bair's brother indicated that he too would like to know his brother's reasons for the shooting, but added that all the facts are not known in this case just yet.
A long- time friend of Shawn Bair's is speaking out in his defense.
She says he's a sweet man and this was unexpected.
Bair's Facebook page was full of photos and quotes from infamous serial killers.
He referred to people as "ticking time bombs" waiting to explode and take victims with them.
However his friends and family say he shouldn't be judged by his Facebook page alone.
“There weren't too many people that didn't like him, so I don't know why he would do anything like this he was a very sweet guy,” says a friend of Bair’s speak out anonymously.
