SOUTH BEND A developer has big plans for a historic part of South Bend. It's called the “Renaissance District."

It will be at the site of the former Studebaker manufacturing plant that closed exactly 50 years ago, this Friday.

Kevin Smith walks through a visual tour of the future development, which will transform the site into a 21st century landmark, steeped in tradition. The site opens into Coveleski Stadium – a landmark of the modern community.

“Turning your eye to the past brings you into the future,” Smith says. “For me to restore our historic significance and put it to use for decades to come, is worth it.”

A long list of events is planned to mark the 50 year anniversary of its closing.
