The Vigo County commissioners in Terre Haute have adopted a smoking ban that bars lighting up in restaurants and bars after Saturday.

The western Indiana county's ordinance will be the same as Terre Haute's ban. Both go into effect on Sunday. The first statewide smoking ban also takes effect Sunday and prohibits smoking in all businesses except private clubs, bars, casinos and retail tobacco shops.

WTHI-TV reports the biggest point of contention was the issue of smoking in private clubs like veterans halls. Tuesday's vote by the Vigo commissioners also bans smoking there.

Proponents of the smoking ban say the vote is great step toward improving Vigo County's health. Opponents say it steps on their rights to choose whether or not to smoke.
