Church holds vigil for Elkhart teen gunned down in parking lot

Dozens gathered for a candlelight vigil Christmas Eve in honor of 18-year-old Devonte Patrick.

Patrick was shot in the very parking lot where the vigil was held, at Prairie Street Mennonite Church in Elkhart.

Police were called to the scene around 2:30 p.m. Dec. 23 and found Patrick lying in blood. He was rushed to Elkhart General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"It's just sad his life was taken for no reason," said Patrick's cousin, Anthony Riley. "It's like one of my kids."

Riley says his cousin just graduated from high school in May and moved to Grand Rapids, hoping to eventually attend college.

Patrick was back in Elkhart visiting his grandmother this week when he was shot.

"He was a well-rounded kid," Riley said. "Loved to play basketball, loved listening to music, hanging with his brothers."

A large group gathered outside the Prairie Street Church Christmas Eve to say prayers for Patrick's family and the family of whoever's responsible for his death. Many of the people were strangers to Patrick's family, but wanted to offer their support.

Meanwhile, Elkhart police are still investigating. They haven't made any arrests in the case.
